About Us

A Little History

The current off-leash park was brought into existence through the diligent and effective work of the F.I.D.O. Steering Committee which initially included Carroll Ballard, Richard & Sarah Broderick, Martha & Robert Hall, Bob & Pam Nixon, Janet Sutton, and Sally Turner.

Beginning in the Summer of 2002, the committee worked with the city to find and establish an off-leash dog area within the city limits. After considerable negotiations and study, the Anacortes City Council passed an ordinance authorizing a temporary off-leash park at the present H Avenue site on August 18, 2003.

The committee immediately began organizing work parties and raising money for the construction of the park. Many volunteers helped construct the park by clearing, fencing, filling low spots, spreading shredded bark, putting up the kiosk, etc. Most of the improvements to the park have been financed by private contributions solicited by the Steering Committee. As of 4/9/04, $3,296.76 had been donated.

The Off-Leash Park had its Grand Opening Celebration on November 22, 2003. Over 150 dog-lovers and their canines visited the park that day. Since opening day it has been estimated that an average of 40 people and their dogs enjoy the park each day.

Much has been accomplished! But much remains to be done. The City of Anacortes plans to expand the current H Avenue Dog Park into a combined baseball field and dog park. Click here to view the 2004 plan (approx. 300k). The plan calls for a paved entry road and parking, a 5' wide perimeter walking trail, a children's play area, restrooms, as well as creek restoration and an interpretive trail. The dog park portion will be 1.5 acres (nearly similar in size to the current area) and will have three double gate access points. In addition, a covered picnic bench shelter and dog watering/washing station will enhance the park. Currently, this plan has been approved by the Anacortes City Council but no date has been set for the start of construction.
